BREAKING NEWS!
There’s something about being recognised for our pursuits and endeavors that just feels good. Especially as a creative. No matter what we might say outwardly, I think we all crave some sort of validation and connection with others. Something to tell us that we’re on the right path, however slowly it may be taking us to walk it. I recently had one of those moments...
That moment came in the form of an email. And as a result, I’ve got some exciting news to share with you all. I’ve received not just one, but TWO honorable mentions in the 19th Pollux Photography Awards! And to top it all off, two of my images will be showcased in an exhibition at the Fotonostrum Gallery in Barcelona this December.
19TH POLLUX AWARDS - HONOURABLE MENTIONS
Let's dive right into the details. I decided to enter the awards not expecting anything to come from it. But, the chance to exhibit in Barcelona, if selected, was exciting so I thought, why not? I entered two categories and, to my surprise, the judges saw something they liked in the images.
First up, I received an honorable mention in the art nude category. I entered a number of images to the awards, including the ‘Naked is Always in Fashion’ images, shot with model Rebecca Perry, and also ‘Frames on the Edge’ an older set inspired by the work of Helmut Newton.
Now, I must admit that I wasn’t sure these images would resonate. Art nude is one of the most subjective and somewhat controversial genres of art photography. But, it's a great feeling when your vision aligns with the judges' appreciation, and you find yourself recognized among other talented artists from around the globe. The second honorable mention came in the still life category. Now, still-life may not sound as thrilling as the art nude category, but it's fascinating to me how ordinary things can be transformed into captivating art when seen through the lens of imagination.
I entered images from the ‘Melancholia’ series. The shots I created in this series will always be deeply important to me for a lot of reasons. You can read more about the project in the blog of the same name. So again, it’s such an honour to have them recognised by other creatives and photographers.
Receiving these two honorable mentions has been exciting and also some validation for me as an artist. But, the real icing on the cake is that, as a result of my honourable mentions, two of my images will be on display in an upcoming exhibition at the Fotonostrum Gallery in Barcelona in December 2023. Sadly, I could only select two so I went for these.
Now anyone that knows me will know how much I love Spain and Barcelona in particular. A city I’ve visited many times, with a vibrant culture and amazing art scene. Also, I’ve been learning Spanish for a long time, so I’m excited to see if I can actually use any of it. But, the main thing for me, is to see my work displayed alongside other talented artists and have the opportunity to engage with fellow photographers, art lovers, and enthusiasts in one of my favourite cities. If you find yourself in Barcelona this December, don't miss the opportunity to visit the Fotonostrum Gallery and experience the exhibition firsthand.
KEEP GOING!
This art journey that I’m on isn’t always easy! Especially recently, when commercial photography work and personal stuff have very much restricted my creating. But, that’s life! It’s a rollercoaster ride, filled with ups and downs, but moments like these make it all worth it. It's a reminder to keep pushing forward, to keep exploring, and to keep chasing and making time for the things you love to do. Whatever that is!
